Paraffin

Paraffin wax, also known as crystalline wax (CAS: 8002-74-2), is a mixture of straight-chain saturated alkanes obtained through the dewaxing, deoiling, and hydro-refining of crude oil lubricating oil fractions. It appears as a white or pale yellow solid at room temperature and comes in various forms, such as flakes, slabs, granules, and beads. Based on the degree of processing and refining, it is categorized into three types: fully refined paraffin, semi-refined paraffin, and crude paraffin. Each type is further subdivided into specific grades based on melting point—typically in 2°C increments—such as grades 52, 54, 56, and 58.

Product Description

Primary Uses

1. Due to its relatively high oil content, crude paraffin wax is primarily used in the manufacture of matches, fiberboard, and canvas.

2. When polyolefin additives are incorporated into paraffin wax, its melting point rises, and its adhesion and flexibility improve; it is widely used for moisture-proof and waterproof packaging paper and cardboard, surface coatings for certain textiles, and candle production.

3. Impregnating paper with paraffin wax yields various types of wax paper with excellent water-resistant properties, suitable for packaging food and pharmaceuticals, metal rust prevention, and printing applications; treating cotton yarn with paraffin wax renders textiles soft, smooth, and elastic.

4. Paraffin wax can also be used to produce detergents, emulsifiers, dispersants, plasticizers, and lubricating greases.

5. Fully refined and semi-refined paraffin waxes have a wide range of applications; they serve primarily as components and packaging materials for food, oral medications, and various products (such as wax paper, crayons, candles, and carbon paper), as coatings for baking containers, and for fruit preservation, electrical component insulation, and enhancing the aging resistance and flexibility of rubber. They can also undergo oxidation to produce synthetic fatty acids.
