Nitric acid

Nitric acid (HNO₃) is a potent inorganic acid and strong oxidizing agent; its aqueous solution is commonly known as qiangshui (or "strong water"). Pure nitric acid is a colorless, highly corrosive liquid; contact with the skin causes proteins to undergo nitration—turning yellow—and results in severe burns.

Product Description

Key properties

1. Chemical properties: A strong monoprotic inorganic acid; it reacts vigorously with metals (except for noble metals such as gold and platinum), metal oxides, and bases.

2. Strong oxidizing ability: It is more aggressive than typical acids; "aqua regia"—a mixture of concentrated nitric acid and concentrated hydrochloric acid in a 1:3 ratio—can even dissolve gold.

3. Instability: It decomposes readily upon exposure to light or heat, releasing reddish-brown nitrogen dioxide gas; therefore, it is typically stored in amber-colored bottles.
