Potassium hydroxide

Potassium hydroxide, commonly known as caustic potash, is a common, strongly alkaline inorganic compound that appears as a white flake or powder solid at room temperature. It is highly soluble in water—a process accompanied by intense heat release—and is extremely hygroscopic, deliquescent, and corrosive.

Product Description

Key physicochemical properties

1. Appearance: Pure white solid in the form of flakes, lumps, or powder.

2. Chemical properties: A strong alkali; its aqueous solution is strongly alkaline, and it neutralizes with acids to form potassium salts.

3. Reaction with air: Highly hygroscopic (readily absorbs moisture from the air and deliquesces) and absorbs carbon dioxide to form potassium carbonate.

4. Solubility: Soluble in water and ethanol (releasing significant heat upon dissolution); insoluble in ether.

Safety and Protection

1. Highly corrosive: Causes severe burns and corrosion to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract; in the event of contact, rinse immediately with copious amounts of water.

2. Storage requirements: Store in a sealed, dry container to prevent moisture absorption, deliquescence, and degradation caused by absorbing carbon dioxide; keep away from acids and flammable materials.
